Arkansas Federal Named 2018 ‘Best Places to Work’

Arkansas Federal Named 2018 ‘Best Places to Work’

Arkansas Federal Credit Union has been named one of the best places to work in Arkansas for 2018 by Arkansas Business, the statewide business journal that annually recognizes the state’s top employers.

This year, the Best Places to Work in Arkansas program recognized 40 of the state’s best work environments. The process for determining winners entailed a two-part survey that first evaluated each nominated company's workplace policies, practices, philosophy, systems and demographics.

An employee survey, accounting for 75 percent of the total evaluation, then measured the employee experience at each company. Best Companies Group analyzed the survey data to determine the winners.

“Our people are the reason we continue to experience phenomenal success year after year,” said Heather Savage, senior vice president for human resources at Arkansas Federal. “We ask our employees to make a difference in the communities we serve, so it only makes sense to focus on and invest in them. When our team members benefit, our members benefit.”

The winning companies will be honored at a special event on Sept. 27, 2018, and featured in a special supplement of Arkansas Business on Oct. 1, 2018.

Jad Malek Named Vice President of Retail Operations for Arkansas Federal Credit Union

Former Wells Fargo executive to help craft credit union’s strategic retail vision

JACKSONVILLE, Ark. (June 6, 2018) – Jad Malek, who spent 16 years with Wells Fargo Bank, most recently as regional banking area president for Utah, has been named vice president of retail operations for Arkansas Federal Credit Union.

Malek will help develop Arkansas Federal’s strategic vision and foster the talent and skills of employees serving in retail operations to ensure excellent member service at all levels. At Wells Fargo, Malek started as a teller and worked his way up to branch manager before being named regional banking district manager for Arizona.

As area president for Wells Fargo’s Utah operations, Malek led a network of more than 50 branches. His work ethic attracted the attention of Arkansas Federal Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Office Martin Schrodt.

“When we set out to hire a vice president of retail, we had three key goals we were trying to achieve,” he said. “Can they lead? Can they develop and train people? Can they make an impact on our organization with strong values and beliefs around an exceptional member experience? Jad has consistently shown his value through results and the hard work of developing associates.”

“I had a lot of choices in terms of locations and financial institutions,” Malek said. “Being part of a growing and dynamic credit union where the emphasis is on making a difference for the lives of our members and employees is what attracted me to Arkansas Federal. The culture here is a great fit for me, and I can’t wait to start meeting our members and employees and really understanding how I can help make a difference.”

Arkansas Federal Credit Union Announces 2018 Scholarship Recipient

Program expanding in 2019 to include non-traditional students seeking secondary education

JACKSONVILLE, Ark. (May 18, 2018) – Sarah Beth Overcash of Brinkley is the recipient of the 2018 Arkansas Federal Credit Union Scholarship, awarded since 2003 to members or children of members who are college-bound, high-school seniors.

This year, Arkansas Federal received more than 250 scholarship applications. Recipients must use the scholarship funds at a two- or four-year accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Postsecondary Education. Ms. Overcash plans to attend Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Oberlin, Ohio.

“We recognize how much a secondary education can improve not only the life of the recipient but also their families and the communities where they live and work,” said Rodney Showmar, Arkansas Federal’s president and chief executive officer. “Providing a greater opportunity for the further education of our members is aligned with our purpose, which is to the be the difference in the lives of our members, employees and the communities we serve.”

Due to the program’s success and demand of members, Arkansas Federal will launch an additional $5,000 scholarship opportunity in 2019 for a member who is pursing secondary education but is a non-traditional student.

“Because of our success in growing the credit union, we are able to expand the scholarship program and reward not only deserving high-school seniors, but also members who may be looking to further their education at a different time in their life,” said Heather Savage, senior vice president of human resources for Arkansas Federal. “This additional scholarship opportunity was a request by one of our members, and for us, it certainly made sense to expand the scholarship program since we offer a college tuition reimbursement program for our employees.”
